It’s been a busy weekend at the GOSEN Wellington Open 2022. With a record entry, Team WN players were well represented, with 43 participating at the tournament over the weekend. Notably, Team WN players C Alley, L Falvey, W Wong, J K Ng and J Sutrisna were featured in all the finals with the exception of the Women’s Doubles event, and both Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles were an all Team WN affair. Another testament to our continued investment in our development programme, junior player S Navarra was also featured in the quarter final and semi final of Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles respectively.
Alley and Falvey started off finals day with an early win of Mixed Doubles, defeating the second seed in Mixed Doubles, Shastri and Weston 21-13, 21-15. Alley then went on to lose 22-20, 15-21, 18-21 to Waikato favourite A Virk in a nail biting Women’s Singles final.
The Men’s Singles finals was an all Team WN affair with second seed Falvey going up against 3/4 seed W Wong. Falvey has the favourable 4-0 head to head record against Wong, and he managed to maintain that record, wining 22-20 and 21-9.
Finals day wrapped up with another all Team WN affair, the Men’s Doubles, with Falvey again featured with Ng against Wong and Sutrisna. Falvey and Ng lived up to their reputations as first seed and secured the title winning 21-16, 21-16.
